The Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA) has been active for half a century in the fields of Corporate Organisation, Automation and Surface Engineering and since 1971 as it was admitted in the Fraunhofer Society. Solutions for organisational and technological functions in the production sector of industrial companies form the main areas of research and development work in the 14 specialised departments where it also addresses issues resulting from developments and changes in the service sector.
The object of the research and development projects is to identify and exploit potential for automation and rationalisation at companies in order to strengthen their international competitiveness and create new employment opportunities with more cost-effective and environmentally friendly production processes and improved products. The Fraunhofer IPA achieves this objective by developing, testing and piloting methods, components and equipment, through to the implementation of complete manufacturing systems and plant.
